Cost of Living in La Paz, BCS: A 2026 Breakdown

One of the most common questions I get from people considering a move to La Paz is the practical one: what does it actually cost to live here? Not the brochure answer — the real, monthly-budget answer. Here is my honest breakdown, based on what residents actually spend, not what a tourism board would tell you.

Housing

Rent for a comfortable two-bedroom apartment near the Malecón typically runs a fraction of what the same space would cost in most U.S. or Canadian coastal cities. Buying, of course, is a different calculation entirely — and depends heavily on the neighborhood, proximity to the water, and whether you are looking at an existing home or new construction.

Utilities and everyday expenses

Electricity is usually the biggest monthly variable, driven almost entirely by how much air conditioning you run in the summer months. Water, internet, and phone service are all considerably less expensive than what most North American residents are used to paying. Groceries follow a similar pattern: shopping at local markets for produce, seafood, and staples costs noticeably less than an equivalent cart at an imported-goods grocery store.

Healthcare

This is one area where La Paz genuinely surprises people. Quality private healthcare, including specialist visits and routine procedures, generally costs a fraction of equivalent U.S. pricing, and many expats carry Mexican private insurance specifically because of how favorably it compares.

The honest caveat

Costs vary a lot based on lifestyle. Someone who wants imported wine, an SUV, and a maid twice a week will spend meaningfully more than someone who leans into the local economy and local products. Most of the long-term residents I work with land somewhere comfortably in between — and are surprised, either way, by how far their money goes here compared to home.
